Endless Zombie Rampage

This has got to be the most addictive browser game I have ever seen. The title says it all: an endless zombie rampage. Blasting away the living dead until you get killed. That’s all there is to it. But damned, it’s fun as hell!

zombierampage1The game has three modes. The first one is defense. You have to defend yourself and your base from the zombies. You start the game with nothing more than a pistol. Kills give you experience points, wich you can use after each level to buy more powerful weapons, buy powerups and heal yourself or repair your base. In survival mode, you get an amount of points you can spend on weapons and powerups and then the horde is unleashed. In this mode, there are no levels and you don’t get to buy more weapons or do any healing. Staying alive as long as possible, that’s the goal. The cool thing is you can start with a kick ass weapon right away. Experiment mode gives you access to all weapons for free, and you can set the spawning rate for the zombies. Fun if you wanna try out the entire armory.

zombierampage2Here’s a look at the armory. Quite a nice selection, as you can see. You start the game (in defense mode, anyway) with a light pistol. Each weapon type has several choices, and you can choose between pistols, revolvers, submachine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, automatic shotguns, light machineguns, miniguns and a laser cannon. That last one isn’t any good, by the way. Insane amounts of damage but single shot and too slow to reload. My weapon of choice is the Pancor Jackhammer, a machine shotgun. Apparently, this weapon actually exists, although only as a prototype. It’s insanely devastating. How devastating? Take a look at the following screenshots:

Yep, that looks like one kick ass gun indeed! You get this result with pretty much any automatic weapon in the game, but the Jackhammer makes is exceptionally easy. At first, that is, because more and more zombies keep coming and they get faster and stronger all the time, and eventually you’ll get swarmed anyway. As cool as all that blood and gore may be, eventually it gets a bit hard to see what exactly is going on, though.

How I got my first videogame

I want to share this story with the rest of the world, because I think it’s hilarious and a bit disturbing at the same time. It’s about how I got my very first video game. This happened when I was six years old. One day, a kid at school brought the coolest thing I had ever seen with him. It was a Nintendo Game & Watch Donkey Kong game. He let me play with it for a few minutes and I was absolutely mesmerized. The only video games I had seen so far were gigantic arcade cabinets; a game small enough to carry around in your pocket was plain and simply too cool to be true.

Of course, I had to have one of these for myself! As soon as I got home from school, I started begging my parents. The answer, of course, was no. Games like this were expensive as hell and my parents were afraid I would get addicted to them. But I had to have one, no matter what! I kept trying, but my parents didn’t want to give in. What I did next is a fine example of what sorts of insane things a stubborn seven year old who has his mind set on something can do. I drew the game on a piece of cardboard and pretended to be playing it, making all the bleeping sounds myself!

At first my parents thought I would grow tired of that after a few minutes, but I didn’t. After a week, I was still playing Donkey Kong on a piece of cardboard! All I did all day was pressing my thumbs on the circle and the cross I drew (the jump button and the D-pad) and making bleeping sounds. At that point, my parents finally gave in. They were probably thought I was gonna go crazy, and the next day my stubbornness and creativity was rewarded with my very own Nintendo Game & Watch Donkey Kong game!

Perhaps I should go sit in a cardboard box and pretend to be driving a Tesla Roadster…

Pac Man Live!

This is just too hilarious to be true. It’s made by the same guy who made a live Mario Kart video a few months ago. He doesn’t get away with his stunt so easily, though. Security manages to grab him and throw him out on the streets.

Game development progress

The end is (finally) nearing for Wasabi Defense. I have finished the last gunship and the final level is almost complete. Here’s what the gunship looks like:

The ship fires bursts of plasma at the player and stops from time to time to fire a devastating laser beam. It took me quite a few attempts to draw it, but I think it looks quite good. The laser beam effect is something I’m quite proud of.

All that’s left now is the final boss. I’m working on the graphics for that, but I already have something quite amazing in mind. It will be a ship consisting of a series of connected spheres that moves a bit like a snake. The spheres are equipped with gun turrets and bomb dispensers. I hope to finish the game by the end of this month.

As for my next games, I have already started on a few prototypes. I’m not gonna tell too much about that already, since they are in the very early stages of development and I won’t reveal too much about them until I’m sure I will finish them. One mistake I’m definitely gonna avoid is trying to put 20 different enemies in the game. I did that for Wasabi Defense, and it turned out to be a gigantic pain in the ass.
